Breeds That Are Mistaken For Pit Bulls

How exactly do you know the actual breed(s) of a pit bull type dog? How many people can point to a dog and say without a doubt that the dog is a pit bull? How many people have seen the following breeds and said ‘that’s a pit bull’?

Now, ask yourself, exactly how many of the above dogs truly fall under the definition of a pit bull?

Here is the definition of ‘Pit Bull’ :

n. 1. A dog of any of various breeds having a muscular body, broad powerful head, and short coat, especially an American pit bull terrier, an American Staffordshire terrier, or a Staffordshire bull terrier. Also called pit bull terrier.

So, what do the dogs that are named in the pit bull definition look like?  Here you go:  These 3 dogs are the ‘pit bull’ dogs.

American Pit Bull Terrier   


American Staffordshire Terrier   


Staffordshire Bull Terrier   


Please, if you have ANY question about whether your dog falls under the ‘pit bull’ stereotype, get a DNA test done. It could save you and your dog a lot grief. It could also save your dog’s life.


I wrote this post in the hopes that it will help everyone understand that there are so many dogs that are being called ‘pit bulls’ but are a completely unrelated breed.

Please, before you start blaming one of the pit bull breeds for something, make sure you KNOW that if was indeed one of those breeds that did wrong.  And remember, EVERY dog is and individual.  So, don’t blame the entire breed for something that one dog did.

  1. I definitely thought the first two were pits I’ve thought that my entire life.

    I’m pretty sure everyone in my town does also. I haven’t really heard or seen much of the others in the list.

    Pitbull though.

    As you say, every dog is individual and we have to know and respect that. I always hear
    negative reviews about Pit Bulls, I am sure your post will have many people understand the
