Some dog breeds need to wear sweaters because they are so small, or they have short fur. Even some large breed dogs wear sweaters. There are breeds that can live in the cold and never need a sweater. Some breeds need sweaters even in the heat of summer. There are many different styles of dog sweaters out there. But do the pit bull breeds need to wear sweaters at any time of the year? Are dog sweaters for pit bulls easy to find?
Dog Sweater Styles
There are many cute dog sweaters to be found out there. Anything from a simple pull on to a frilly sweater can be found. Doggie sweaters come with hoodies, scarves, buttoned collars, and even pockets. Dog sweaters can be slip-ons, zippered, buttoned, or Velcro. Some sweaters come with just holes to put the front legs through. Others have full length sleeves for just the front legs or for all four legs.
Dog sweaters can be knitted, crocheted, or sewn. Most dog sweaters are made from cotton or polyester. Though they are also made with wool and other yarns, t-shirt material, fleece, flannel, suede, and denim. Dog sweaters can also be waterproof or have reflective material on them for safe nighttime walks. There are a lot of different materials and styles to choose from for your dog’s new sweater!
I had tried a few different styles with my boy Trago. He did not like anything that had to go over his head. He stood like a perfect gentleman while I Velcro his fleece sweater around his belly and under his neck. He did not like anything going down his legs or covering his paws.
Do Pit Bulls Need Sweaters?
Some pit bulls love the snow and cold and they seem to be fine without a sweater. Keep in mind however that pit bulls are short haired dogs. Their natural coats are not thick enough or long enough to keep them adequately warm. Most pit bulls in cold weather regions would benefit from wearing a sweater. The tell-tale sign that your pittie is cold, is if he is shivering. Other signs of being cold are whining, slowing down, and if she seems anxious. It’s better to have a sweater on hand just in case.
My boy Trago loved the snow. He would bound around making paths and tunnels. But if he did not have his sweater on then he was done in a matter of minutes, running to the door and inside to his favorite blanket. Trago also loved summer time swimming. But as soon as he got out of the water he was cold and needed to wrapped up. In the heat of the summer he could be found cuddled under a blanket.
How to Get the Right Size Sweater
Not just any sweater will do. You need to measure your pittie to make sure you get him the right size. If you can take your pit bull to the store to try the clothes on, that is even better! There are several measurements that you need to take on your pit bull:
- The widest part of your dog’s chest is right behind the points of his elbows. Get him to stand up and measure from behind the elbows all the way around his rib cage. This is called the girth.
- You also have to measure your pit bull’s length. Start at the base of her neck and measure straight back to the base of her tail.
- Loosely measure the circumference of your dog’s neck. You don’t want your pit bull to feel like he’s being choked by a sweater with a neck that is too tight.
If your dog is in between sizes it is usually best to get the next size up. The best fit is a snug (not tight) sweater. The sweater should go from the base of the neck all the way to the tail. The sweater should cover the chest and upper belly, but leave the lower belly free for easy urination. If you choose a sweater with sleeves, make sure they are short enough to not get tripped up in.

Sweaters for pit bulls are not that hard to find, it seems. You should be able to find a sweater in your pittie’s size at your local pet store.
