Neighbor Pit Bull

While out in my yard, fixing my bike, I saw a neighbor walking her dog.  I have never seen this dog before.  He’s brown and white and rather chubby.  Of course I got excited because he’s a pit bull.  As soon as he saw me he started to wag his tail and pull on his leash.  The dog’s mom asked if it was ok to walk him over seeing as how he wanted to say hi.  I was all for it.  I got down on the ground and let him sniff me.  His mom told me that he is kinda shy, and I could tell that he was nervous.  I did not reach out to pet him because I didn’t want to freak him out.  He did snuffle my face and walk away.  That’s when I realized that the fur from the back of his neck down to his tail was raised.  He showed no signs of being aggressive.  Just nervous.  This was the first time a pit bull parent has asked me permission to have me meet their dog.  I thought it was pretty awesome.

But the mom didn’t offer any info on the dog and didn’t really seem like she wanted to hear any questions.  So,  I asked around…. it seems that the dog had been badly abused by previous owners.  The dog hardly ever leaves his back yard.  So, it seems that the poor dog needs to be socialized.  And exercised.  How can I be helpful?  Without offending anyone?  I would really like to get more info on the dog…..
