Roughly 2,000 pit bulls are euthanized every day. About 1million pit bull type dogs are killed every year. It is about 500,000 times more likely that a pit bull will be killed by a human than the other way around. Not counting the professional and backyard pit bull breeders, at any given time across America there are around 35,000 pit bulls available for adoption in shelters.
So why are so many pit bulls euthanized daily? And why are there so many pit bulls in shelters?
* The biggest reason is that people breed pit bulls for money. Back yard breeders continuously breed the females. This can lead to birth defects and health problems in the mother dogs. Once the females are no longer of use, they get thrown away like trash. As do the non perfect pups since no money can be made from them.
Starting at 6 months old, dogs come into heat a couple of times a year. They are pregnant for only 2 months. In just a few years one dog can have hundreds of puppies. Of course if not fixed, those puppies will have puppies. In 6 years, 1 unspayed momma and her puppies can produce up to 67,000 dogs. That’s about 11,167 dogs a year….
* Another reason so many pit bull type dogs end up in shelters is owner surrender. This happens for different reasons: they have to move and the new landlord doesn’t except pit bulls, life gets too busy to properly take care of a dog, the dog gets old, they got another pet that doesn’t get along with their pit bull, or just plain don’t want the dog anymore.
* Some pit bulls end up in shelters because they got loose and went for a joy run. If they are micro chipped then they usually get back home where they belong. Not all of them are chipped, so not all of them make it home. Some of them get on the adoptions list and some of them get on the euthinasia list.
Please get all of your pets chipped or at least have tags on them. Please get them spayed and neutered. Please adopt don’t shop.
